Yuri's Wood Elves

Postby Yuri » Thu Feb 12, 2009 5:32 pm

Hi!

I just wanted to start sharing with you my work so far on my elves. The idea was not to brag (if I do have some sculpting talent as ppl say, but I doubt it), but to show you my miniatures so you could point me and give me advice. Apprentice cannot improve without master's advice and criticism. So, I would be very happy if you would comment my minis and teach me. It would only make me better.

Thank you for comments in advance. I'll try to post as much minis until I'm done with my army.

This was Anardakil's idea, to post minis in public. I was (and still I am) very shy, and, atm, I feel so embarrassed and still thinking of deleting this post, like nothing happened.

Cheers

So here's the first mini. Treeman.
Image

This was my first mini ever made. I was disappointed with the new treeman when he was published by games-workshop. He looked... well, not like T6 thing. And not like tree at all, but like bunch of branches and tree logs. So I decided to make this one. I dont remember when this happened. When new edition of Wood Elves came, around that date (actually, when I first saw their treeman). He's painted in brown because I needed him for local tournament, and one of the prerequisites was to have your army painted at least in three colors. So, I painted him in two, and sliped in! :D
This eternal guard is just to show the scale (read: what the hell i was thinking when I was taking picture?!)

Wow, you sculpted that by yourself, impressive, very impressive!

Well, that being said, now onto the citics: I think, even though this models looks a lot better then the treeman produced by GW, that it missis something... Just like the 'real' Treeman: leaves. Also, IMHO I think there could be more branches, becuase it is a bit skinny ATM.
And that is it actually, nothing I see, besides that, needs changing (IF they need to change, what do I know, I really suck at using GS  )

Again, very, very impressive. Looking forward to see more of you!

-Farodin

P.S. You're shy, but you shouldn't be, because you got talent, your very good at sculpting. That is obvious to all I think ;) . Please, go on with this thread.

Very nice TM, yuri! I like it :3
You could drybrush your TM with a bit brighter colours to make a better contrast on the model, which could look better (I myself prefer only a tad brighter colour for highlighting, just as you did but this isn't what is generally seen as impressive :paranoid: ).
I also agree with Fardoin that you could've added a few more branches - the head looks good, but lower is a bit few.. and since it's a 'treeman', I'd personally would've gone with even longer roots that allow him to crall around. I guess the big blob he's standing on is something like a stone? how about covering it with some moss and grass? :D
Apart from this: very dynamic pose, keep up the good work! (And in a few days don't forget to rip me to shreds when I open my blog    )

Thanks guys for support, and I'm glad you like it. He's still WIP, lol, and all those things you said are in plan. That blob under him is just temporary, dont worry, and he's not painted at all. I just needed him for one tourney, so I painted him in brown.
Only one thing... There be no branches in lower part of the body, in in his upper part, I mean head. After all, hes a tree, and I havent yet seen some old oak that has branches in lower parts. Dont worry, btw, for roots, i'm planning to put more of them too.

Thanks for advices, anyway! :)

Ok, I think its time for new mini. Wardancer Lord, and future general of my army.

In that cloth-thing in her right hand you can put a sword so it looks like she is whirling with him around. This morning I woke up with idea to put two-bladed sword in her left hand, but dont know yet is it a good idea. And about the hair, when I've done it, my sis entered the room and she said she likes the dreads on her, and when I asked her to stay with dreads or to go with the hair, she said I should leave dreads alone, so thats why she has dreadlocks. After all, my sis gives me best critiques! :D

Nice mini mate! I like the idea of a sword in her right hand, though I do think that you should place another sword in her left hand, or that you take a spear-staff (those weapons the EG are carrying). I'm not really sure what a two bladed sword is, it sounds pretty weird/ I'm guessing you meant a two handed blade, in which case I say: wicked idea!

About the dreadlocks, I'm not to sure either, they are elves you know, so I don't thing that dreadlocks is something an elf would have... So I would go for normal hair. But if you like to follow up the critics of your sister, then you should keep them ;) .

Can't wait to see it painted, and about the TM, you didn't said it was WIP so I didn't knew of course :paranoid: .

Ridiculously cool...

Everything is just so damn awesome.

The WD lord is sick. The pose is great, and the idea of the sword entangled in the cloth is really original (at least for actually making it work on a model). Personally, I think the dreads work fine, and I don't think that you should put anything in the left hand. It looks like she's using it to balance, not to hold something.
What kind of putty did you use for the ribbon? Where's the headdress from?

I like to TMA too, but I think he should have some roots coming out of the ground to acknowledge the fact that he's not rooted to the spot. Other than that, he looks very imposing, just like a Treeman should be ;)

Eager to see more

Thanks again for feedback guys (think I'll thank every time). Let me first say all pics of minis are not yet finished, and they can be modified as long as I dont paint them.
Now, let me first answer Farodin then I'll reply to Ryikko.
Actually, idea was to leave the left hand alone. Placing one-handed blade looks, well, common, so I thought of two-bladed sword. Spear is too big and I dont like it. Two-bladed sword is sword with blades on both sides, something like Darth Mauls light saber, but instead of sabers - blades! About the hair... yes I know its against the fluff of elves, like gracious race, but I was thinking, those elves are in woods, so the have to be at least a bit wild. Dreads were not meant to be here, as I said, but it was my sisters idea, and I'll respect that, sorry. ;)

Now to Ryikko. I like to hear someone likes her. The idea of a sword entangled in cloth is not so original. I picked it up from the "House of the flying daggers" movie. Putty I used is some kind of gray stuff, made by Procreate. Dont ask me, I use it only bcoz its cheaper than green stuff. And mini itself was made out of 4 minis: old daemonette's body, hands from two different spellsingers and head from Rackham's Bard of Alahan.
Yeah, many ppl told me about more roots I should make on mr. Treeman. But it has to wait.

I'll try to keep updating this, but I'm warning you, I'm working very slow due to lack of time I have. Atm, I'm working on first unit of Wild Riders, plus some Treekin. One Rider is done already. Thanks again for positive (i guess) feedback.

Cheers

Oh that is what you meant with a two bladed sword, didn't quiete got the idea :p . Sounds nice, and about the dreads, I told it already didn't I? When you want to follow up the advice of you sister, then you should!

Hope to see more soon! Good luck painting,

Hi!

Time to remove dust from "my" topic. Here's another mini I've done it. It's mr. I've-been-a-bad-boy Alter (can't wait to start painting him).
This time I experimented with wire. I know its not Arimata-level but still...
Please comment, but I'd rather see some advices. Thanks.

WOW....

that would have to be the best alter ive seen great job

The double sided sword sounds interesting itl be good to see the finished product. IMO the dreads can work for woodies, like Arimata's.

Nice sculpting there :)

The treeman and wardancer I like, but the alter.. is a bit too chaosy for my taste. Remember that the alters are elves, they haven't even got the forest spirit trait. I like the model, but I believe its place is in a BoC army and not in a WE army :)

My tree-crew. I made them in 2 days - woohoo!!!
Thoughts?
ImageImageImage

*little note*
you can see a lot of mouldling lines, fingerprints, extra stuff, etc. All those have been removed after I made shots,
and now they are undercoated and prepared to be painted, and I'm too lazy to take pictures of them again

And here's something to brag (don't look at the base). :sexy:

I use, so called, graystuff. I'm not sure who's the manufacturer, but its the same as GW's greenstuff, just cheaper and not so sticky (which has its pros and cons).

nice conversions! absolutely love the hair on the alter, what wire did you use for that? I think if he had more of an animal or elf face head (with the hair) he would not look so chaosy or give him a bow instead of the dryad claws to make him more elven, add a cloak & quiver or elven cloth/bitz on him and he'll look just the part

I really like the idea of an Alter noble being something more than human (well...Elvish) and that looks amazing. Whilst I don't entirely agree with Aelorian, I do think he's a little too far gone to the wild side from his Asrai origins and I'd love to see a few for elvish details on him. But even as he is, he's awesome.

The Tree Kin look impressive, I have thus far been rubbish at sculpting so I'm jealous! They are a bit on the cute side but I reckon painted up they'll look wicked.

I'm glad you like it.
I dont know about that alter guy. He IS chaosy. Now when I look at him with base colors on him, he didnt end up as I imagined to be - a satyr with a wooden mask, but it doesnt matter. I'll use him for Mordheim, or something else (e.g. collecting dust in some old box). And, to be honest with you, I dont care much if he's too much chaosy. :D
