Krome: Sure, I do not mind, I copied my number of color schemes already :)

I finished some more wardancers over the weekend. I had 10 before, so now I have 14 normal ones, 2 musicians and a champion, to comfortably make 2 units with pretty much any composition. I still have to paint my wardancer lord. And the gamezone eagles I ordered finally arrived, so I will be working on those in the near future.

Below are 2 units of wardancers. I know they look the same, but that was kind of the point, to make them interchangable. Believe me, they are different models :)

Edit: I actually finished a unit of dryads even, but they look so much like the first one it is not even worth posting.

Postby gwinn » Sat Apr 17, 2010 3:53 pm

Another update here. I finished a bunch of stuff, so plenty pictures this time. I hope someone is still reading this :)

First of all, my branchwraith, not a conversion really, just a few dryad bits and pieces put on one base. I have decided to have a go with the purple spites. She has 2, to distinguish her from ordinary dryads. Not much to paint on her otherwise, I always struggle with making these simple models interesting. If anyone has a cool idea for a branchie, let me know.

Next up is the great eagle. This was my big project, as I had to have him finished by the end of April, for a tourney I am attending. well, I did not have to, but I have a commitment of not playing unpainted models.
Getting the eagle finished was not easy at all. The first problem was getting the eagle, as I did not want the GW one. So I ordered the gamezone eagle via a local shop. It took them 3 weeks to get it into the Czech republic and then the eagle was lost by our wonderful post office. And they took another 2 weeks to acknowledge this, so I had to wait all the time :( Anyway, I became fed up with the service of the shop and ordered 2 new ones from the UK on Ebay. These arrived within a week, so that is a lesson learned :)

Next up was assembling it, which is a pain. The gamezone models are beautiful, but they are very poorly cast. So lots of filing and miliput went into this one. And pins, of course. Making the base was also tricky, as I had to build a wire frame to attach him to. And it had to look good while being sturdy ;) In the end, he is attached to a 2mm wire that goes all the way down to the base and forms a centre of the tree. Therefore, the centre of gravity is in the middle of the base. The rock is just a visual counterbalance, no weight there. I hope you like him :)
Image
Image

BTW, he is huge and a pain to take pictures off, so better pictures in the future, if I figure it out :)

And last is my wardancer hero, nothing special, just a little cleaner then my regular ones. I loved the pose of the model though, it is kinda cool. Also the spites are purple again. And the red hair which makes him stand out so much more. Seems like a theme for my heroes ;)

Next up will be a couple more glade guard and maybe some glade riders. And my alter, when I figure out which model to use for him. Suggestions welcome.

Very nice work Gwinn! You're a great inspiration to us all, and your updates are really quick

I think the purple sprites were a great choice and the model looks very interesting. The branchwraith is quite tricky and after trying a lot of things I ended up using the drycha model because is the only one that really stands out. What I see some people have done is to add something to the base (a branch, or something so she stands on it, Corai did a very nice job, check it out here : viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12187)

Very nice eagle, I'm not sure about the base though it seems so bulky, but the model looks nice.

There is only one thing I have to say about your wardancer noble, tattoos please! Everything else is great. Specially the gem on the sword

Postby gwinn » Sun Nov 21, 2010 8:09 pm

Hey guys, long time no see..

I actually did not abandon my army and would like to finish it by january / february. Since there are some changes in 8th, I will be doing some treekin instead of all the wild and glade riders I had, since they are rubish now. I will also need to convert a BSB and do some more waywatchers to serve as scouts. And at the end, I would like to make a display board for the whole army.

I finished a quick paint on my new treeman and also some other stuff I will post shortly. Mainly banners and some extra glade guards and my 2nd eagle. Also some more dryads, but they look like the rest, aka dull, so wont post those.

Anyway, the treeman for now :

Glade guards. 14 new guys, so I could field more. I also made the banners and musicians, for my older units, which had none, as they were useless in 7th. I also repainted the old guys slightly, not sure you can tell the difference from the pictures.

And last but not least, my new great eagle. Like this one more then the previous guy.. Anyway, this is all of this weekend batch, so no more updates for a couple of days.

I think your painting skills are excellent! This looks like a very fine army to me. I really like your colour scheme. I even like your war dancers altough I think the models are horrible.

Treekin, which concludes the bulk of the army. Only my BSB now, for which I need to find a model and then like 5 more scouts and that is it.

Man, I just found this thread. This some inspiring stuff

What struck be the most are those Glade Guard, I mean the color palette is outasight! Grey, brown, kinda dirty yellow, man I've never even thought of it. LOL makes it hard to post my summer Woodies after this awesomeness. :p

May I ask how you get that great dirty yellow colour as its so cool?

Okay, so my project is almost finished. Over the last couple days and especially this weekend, I finished the display board for my largely completed army. My girlfriend helped me immensely, especially gluing the tiny leaves and painting the board. I believe she had some dreams where she was gluing tiny leaves to a board, after doing this for about 3 hours straight :) The pictures are not the best, as it seems impossible to photograph it properly, without a semi professional setup. I will try and see if taking pictures in daylight is any better, but my hopes are low. We took like 80 pictures, trying to get the angles and photo quality to be half decent. Anyway, here are the few pictures we selected to be shown:

For the stuff that I plan to do to get this army done for good, I will meet a friend tomorrow, who is to convert my BSB, and then I am done. Maybe, when I feel like it, I will swap my free forest for one with slots for 10 waywatchers, that I will have to make. We'll see.

Your work is incredible... How did you get to the skill of painting you have as well as the speed you painted them in? Everything is so well painted, it looks so good.
A gamers view of life: ... See, the graphics are just incredible, you can really see the detail in the sun-sets and other visually stunning things.. The gameplay however.. Ugh.. It leaves a -lot- to be desired.

That's every single thumb of mine up. Beautiful army you have there, could even say perfect in every aspect. There's absolutely nothing one might dislike there, everything is so clean and well done. And that display board is simply stunning. I was amazed by your trees when I first saw them, and now after reading your tutorial and failing to create even a single tree, I adore them even more. It's hard to get that kind of texture out of toilet paper!

I'd say this army is Hall of Fame stuff.

Kaiurai: Been painting for about.. 7 years now. Wow, been more time then it seems. It feels like there is such a long road ahead, to becoming good.
Anyway, I suggest painting a mini to the best of your current ability every once in a while. Really taking your time with it, not trying to make it fit with your army. Experimenting with techniques, you have never done before (nmm, osl, textures, blood, snow, freehands). Or just trying to stress one aspect of painting. Like taking a guy covered in armour and working on metallics, trying to keep the other areas as simple as possible.
Those kinds of minis gave me the most, in the sense of skill improvements. While you mass paint armies, your just put your skill to use, you don't improve it much. My biggest stagnation period was when I was painting my wolfen warband, one after the other. Almost no difference between the first and last model.
Hope yours was not a rhetorical question, felt like it a bit :)

BTW, how do you guys feel about my non-wood elf, or even non-warhammer stuff? Should I post that, or keep it to woodies only?

Hey,

nothing new army wise, but I got a shiny new toy. I bought a cheap airbrush and been playing with it this afternoon. It is great for preshading large areas, that would normally require extensive blending. Such as WE horses. Would be even better on monsters like the Giant.

This is the result of 10 minutes a piece with the airbrush. Not a single brush stroke. And of course, my whooping 3 hours of experience in using the airbrush.
Image

To me, they look fairly nice. Sure, you have to touch it up with a brush, but it saves a ton of work and time. So for any of you, who are thinking about getting an airbrush to complement your painting, like I was: Go for it! It is worth it.

Those are lovely. The effect is different to a brush painted model though so I think the airbrush is probably best used where this sleightly flatter effect is preffered.

I will probably use it on the (pink) cloaks of my models. Having seen these pictures The effect looks perfect.

Thanks for posting.
Elf-light, bat-light,
Touchwood-light and toad-light,
And the sea a shimmering gloom of grey,
And a small face smiling
In a dream's beguiling
In a world of wonders far away.
