grade liders horsies

Postby dusk1983 » Tue Jul 24, 2012 4:15 am

I've started working on the glade rider horsies that Ive had for yonks. (I have about 16 of them, never built em cause well... they're glade riders)

I'm just wondering if anyone has any helpful hints for painting the horses to anywhere near the quality of the horses on the GW box. Normally I dont care that much about the quality of my work, but I'm honestly only doing the horses for fun, so I wanted to make them well. Im fairly sure GW used to have a tutorial on wood elf painting but took it down when the new paints came out and made their tutorial redundant, but I'm still using my old paints.

Thoughts? comments? suggestions? I'll give anything a whirl, just felt like getting a bit creative with paints.

anyone at all? no suggested colour combinations? I've just been trying out some crazies! Just slathered on elf flesh on a black base then put the red wash over the top. When that dries I dont know what colour Im going to dry brush to highlight. ITS CRAZY!

EDIT: Nobody panic. a dry brush of vomit brown and all the crazy has gone out of my pinkish elf flesh horse.... I feel so alone in this thread.

Got to throw a line to my buddy Dusk. I painted all of my horses with the big brown and white patches associated with the pinto horses of the American west. Nothing could be easier - base coat white and splotch on the brown. Use various shades of brown from light tan to almost black. I got a bit creative with the splotches so that some of them form symbols and patterns. I made a couple of the manes and tails bright, firey red because we're Elves. We are masters of natural magic! Our horses can be any dang color we want them to be and we can change it any time we want to right? I also painted various symbols and "handprints" on them as the plains indians used to do when on the warpath. Looks cool.

Seriously Bill, my horses are painted like pintos. Wow, now you are copying me :p

Dusk you could look up some random pictures of horses to help you decide how to go about it. Remember don't paint all your horses the same color.

I prefer to see it as great minds thinking alike. Throw in some Palominos and few Appaloosas and you can't go wrong. Empire pistoleers look great when mounted on uniform colored horses. They look Napoleonic. Like the Scots Greys or something.

Will post pictures when all details are done. Mum's in town this week, so modelling has to take second priority to *shudder* leaving the house

sides which, i reckon Bill and Moose should post some pictures, I'd like to see how theyve done it!

I like to use a white undercoat and then watered down colors (brown/black/grey etc.) and then just do some shading.
Maybe some highlights on the hair but it's usually not necessary

just borrow one of their phone's bill! It'll be swell!

An update is that I'm considering actually flocking the bases of these horsies, something I've not done in 7 years of hobby. OOOOOH.

first four pictures are of the first ten models side view three at a time.

SDC10408.JPG

And this one is the one I'm most proud of. You know when youre going crazy with random paints and you make something you really like, but cant remember which exact paints you used to get the effect? Yeah. This guy.
SDC10410.JPG

He's like non-mattalic metallic bronze and I DONT KNOW HOW I DID IT. photos dont do him all that much justice.

Front view! I'm Howard Moon Comin atcha!

final photo taken from the side ya'll havent seen yet
SDC10412.JPG

so thats my first 10!

I actually have another 5 to get done still but I'm taking abit of a rest now. Will probably do the riders for these ones before I paint the other horses. I find painting horses to be a lot more relaxing than the figures that sit atop them, and you can get a little bit more creative with the horses.
