WE Fluff question of Kindreds

Postby Kojiro Kakita » Sun Jul 31, 2005 9:09 am

Okay, I think I might be a little bit confused. My questions are; what exactly are kindreds, are they like clans? and If so how can a noble call different kindreds together, for example, A noble calls on a Spellweaver Kindred, a Wardancer, and a Wildrider Kindred, could he do that? Can someone answer this.

Kindreds are the different types of people within Wood Elf society. Mostly, they are war centered. They often work as small clan-groups called Kithbands (I think) with their own kinfellows. They do come together in battle. Although I don't know what relations between the clans are like, they are probably quite varied.
I don't understand the second half of your question. D'you mean "Can he be part of all those kindreds"?

For reference:
Alter Kindred: Loner Kindred, sort of Hermitish
Waywatcher Kindred: Waywatchers
Wardancer Kindred: Kindred of the Wardancers, worshipers of Loec
Wild Rider Kindred: The Guardians of Orion
Eternal Guard Kindred: Eternal Gaurd
Scout Kindred: Scouts
Glamourweave Kindred: Forest spirit mages

What he means, is can a, say Eternal Noble call on a say, wardancer noble to fight with/ for him. etc.

I'm not so sure about this myself.

He can ask for help. He can't order him, as far as I know. I don't know all the details on Asrai society, but I think it's pretty anarchical.

Yeah, Blade_singer Mango got it right. So could an Eternal Guard Leadertell me how call on a Wardancer Kithband for help. The answer would help with the fluff of my army and could tell me how a Highborn is able to call on all the different Kindreds to fight under him.

Yes, he could. They wouldn't be forced to come, but I think they probably would. So yes, you can have an EG general with Wardancers in his army.

As above, while the Eternal Guard Leader has no direct authority over the Wardancers, he can requesition help from them in times of need and if possible, the Wardancers will respond to the request. Also the same if their situations were reversed.

I find the whole Kindred issue fascinating. Like the marks of chaos are there certain kindreds whose animosity towards each other is so great that they cannot fight alongside eachother.

Also i wonder how the different kindreds relare to the forest spirits. Are their certain ones, maybe alter, who have a really close relationship with the forest spirits and others who look down apon them.

Also does anyone know much about the scout and waywatcher kindred. While the waywatchers have many different rules, in reality it doesnt seem as though there is much difference between a kindred that scouts, and a kindred that scouts even better while shooting differently. Its akin to having the noble fighter kindred, then having the fighter kindred who are faster andfight with curved swords, hope someone gets what I am trying to say:P

well the scout kindred is cheaper so that might have something to do with. Any way its the glamourweave kindred that are closest to the FS.

Ariel.

According to the 5th Ed. fluff it wasn't only because they were from two different clans, but because they decided to run off. Not exactly the Juliet and Romeo situation, as the different clans weren't in war with each other. The elders just didn't like the anarchic situation or example those two young elves created, I guess.
As for the intermarriage between different clans. It would be necessary if the elves have a similar way to pass their code to the next generation. But as we don't know much about their customs all interpretations seem plausible.

But I I'm certain, the wood elves aren't anarchic. They have a royal court, Highborn and Nobles. That indicates that they are a hierarchic society. And the elder council underlines my interpretation. They are certainly not as strict as the Bretonnians or the Imperium. And the structure may be flatter but it isn't a society with too much freedom for the invidual. I guess this is the reason why some wood elves may be seen outside the woods. They like to live their own lifes, make their own decisions.
Loyalty to it's own clan will be another strong trait of a wood elf imho.

That is why a noble of any kindred will most likely be able to command a wardancer band to war if needed. Though probably he won't be able to command the band in times of peace.

Not neccessarily. At the end this is fantasy and you can always incoporate some imagination of your own into this game. :)

Nobody can say it is forbidden. But nobody can tell you if it is probable too. Why is it so important anyway? The Wood Elves are a highly myserious folk, just use your imagination. And don't listen too closely to the fluff bunnies :).

Plus if anybody ever happens to try to censor you regarding your fluff, remind them that this is a fanatasy game, and fluff can and should be as creative as possible :)

Well, since my lasT HE army was completley unfluffy, (High Elfs who took on a Japanese apperance and attitude, and mostly Calvary) I wanted to make a army that was ture to the fluff. Well, I guess I have to wait and get the book to be sure.

So back on topic: Does anyone know how these kithbands were created.

The Army Book has fluff that explains that.
But to make it short, pretty much the Elves that were in Athel Loren broke up into different groups, because of different desires/fighting styles.
I don;t have the book myself, but I read the fluff in the army book, while spending some time at my local GW store. I must say some of the best fluff I have read.

First they were all High Elven colonists. During the War of the Beard against dwarves and the later call back to Ulthuan to all HE, they decided to remain in their colonies. But as the war had devastated most of their homes and their numbers weren't high enough to protect themselves against all kinds of attacks, being it Dawi, Orcs & Gobbos or other kinds of threats they searched desperately for a new home.
Athel Loren was at the beginning not very welcoming to the colonists. But thanks to the fact that the new Asrai could fight even in winter and helped defend Athel Loren they could form a stable alliance with the tree spirits.
Why this long explanation regarding clans and kindreds? Well the colonists came from different places all over the old world, mainly the bretonnian coast though.
The elves with the horses, glade riders, chose to inhabit the glades surrounding the big wood. Others came to depend upon a special tree i.e.: the lost clan. Again some were very good at hunting and watching the ways, producing powerful bows or spellcasting etc.
I don't know if the actual fluff on the different clans is still similar to the old one, so I refrain to write too detailed information on the different clans. But I guess you get the idea.

Now I'm not so sure we can use clans and kindreds as the same word. What if the clans all have different kindreds among them. Some may have no spellweavers or singers, some will lack waywatchers. But I don't think clans would be entirely formed by waywatchers i.e.
Like the Aiel clans in Wheel of Time with the different families.

Not even the army book, if I am correct, went into that depth of detail regarding each clans and their kindreds. So it is up for a guess.

wardancer characters are the exception to joining units. Alters cant join any at all, but all the others can join any thing they please.

every ones talking about the alter kindred having an 18 inch move. Since i dont have the book i am wondering how he gets this ability.
I asume he must ride a stead, if so does he get fast calvary rules (mind you individual models can wheel, shoot and see at will) and can he join unit.

A single 18 ince mover sounds awsome for cannon hunting

No, I have the book, his M is just increased to 9. Therefore an 18 inch charge and 18 "run" that single characters can do

19 inch movement is nice, but I find that I like a Wardancer Lord alot more
